The bees are working extra hard to stash away pollen for the winter. I planted a lot of things that are late bloomers just for this reason, but the dahlias haven't set any flowers--they went in late, though. I might do some squash next year just for the flowers...some of the things I planted this year were meh, like Bergamot. It grows fabulously here in the wild and mildews horribly in my yard. The morning glories look great. I always wish I had planted more, but they are fussy about location. They like compost and sun and I haven't got a lot of sun. The bees like these too: They don't really like their photos taken but they are hungry enough this time of year to let me get close: (That is mint that this bee is on) We have lots of other bugs--I kind of like the cicadas, they have a cool paint job, even if they don't look too bright: I think the cat is looking forward to it being a little cooler so we can spend more time outside: We have these guys o...

Happy Mother's Day! Mostly all I did today was make a homemade fountain from stuff around the house: The irises have finally bloomed, though they are unusually short: We have lily of the valley blooming: And a Western Jay: The lawn got mowed and some other yard chores got done, though I need to do a lot of laundry at this point! And finish some commissions. :o

Peony Season

And I have them out in the garden! I just wish someone would invent a repeat blooming peony, the season is too short. But I did cut some and bring them in: Out in the garden there are plenty of other flowers, Siberian Iris: Chives... Snapdragons: Catmint (with bonus bumblebees): And when it's not raining, a cat: here waiting for the rain to stop, so she can go out.

Lilacs and Dandelions

Image
Even though it's been gray, cold and cloudy, we are getting flowers! I had to walk to pick up my car and on the way saw a lot of interesting flowers, including more big dandelions. The best part was getting my car back for under 300.00--and it runs.

Flowers from Cat

Image
Cat has a tumblr going , and I freely pilfered from it, as I want some Spring pictures--outside, except for grass, rabbits and mud, we don't have much in the way of flowers yet, or even sprouts. Here's what we have: Some little prairie flower; a butterfly: and a super-hardy mullein... which looks a little mashed right now but will pop back up once it gets warm. Mulleins grow to 5 feet if they have sun, and old herbal that I have calls them "A stately herb" and in the voodoo/voudun tradition they are "the orisha of the winds" because of the wind scattering the seeds. Those soft leathery leaves are supposed to contain an antifungal and antiwart compound, but I just like how they look--and the fact that this plant went through temperatures of -10 f, and having 4 feet of snow piled on it,(not to mention being walked on) and it just looks a little used. :D

Happy May Day!

Today I discovered that rabbits like to eat the fallen petals of these magnolias.
