Happy Easter!

Image
We did nothing special today--J went fishing, I played with the cat: (That is a sneeze, not a bad joke) I worked on an outfit for Valentine: And we got a visit from the Easter Raccoon: "You have a bit of millet  on your nose." "Yeah, right there...you might want to just take a swipe with your paw.." Happy Easter!

The Bird Feeder

Image
Random tulip is there just because they look great today...all the bother of planting them is so worth it. (I usually get a bag of 50 in the fall, thinking I LOVE tulips...until I am on my hands and knees, trying to push number 20 down into a rocky hole as it rains on my back.) Anyway, the big news is that my neighbor put up a bird feeder. Normally my gray cat ignores birds--he's not a "leaper", he likes to either wait by a hole or race like a cheetah after rabbits. But it looks like he has plans here. I may have to ask the neighbors to move the feeder up a little. On the other hand, the gray cat will grab all the squirrels and mice that come to share in the seeds. In the evenings, I have been working on a shirt for my Granado Xavier, and there was a miracle and the collar doesn't look too bad (so far). It's been slow going since I have had so much work.

My Own Tulips

Image
After months of buying flowers at the grocery store, at last I have my own flowers! The tulips are always a chore to plant in the fall and I am always glad every spring that I did. The magnolia tree also looks magnificent, especially if you are inside and can't see where it is making a royal mess of the walkway. At least the chipmunks and the rabbits are trying to clean up some of it--it's a lot of biomass to let go to waste. (We'll compost the rest once it is down).

Tulip Bulbs and Easy Digging

Image
I planted two dozen tulip bulbs today. It was tough digging in the clay soil, and I don't think I got them the 8 inches deep that you need to prevent squirrels from digging them up again (apparently squirrels get tired around 6 inches or so and give up, and go look for easier prey). One year in New Jersey I planted several in the front yard, and they were so easy to dig in! I stuck my trowel down and twisted it and just rolled those bulbs down into the dark. It turned out later that I had been following a vole tunnel, though, digging into it every few inches or so. Now picture Mr. Vole sitting, reading his paper by a glowworm lamp, when BLAM! The Mother of All Acorns lands in his dining room. Needless to say very few of those tulip bulbs ever came up.
