Why I did not go to the Kane County Fair

Image
The weather conditions were summed up by the Daily Herald : The 148th annual Kane County Fair wrapped up with so much heat, a battery-powered car driven by a child in the Power Wheels Demolition Derby caught on fire Sunday in the grandstand event. No one was hurt during the competition in front of a large, cheering crowd, baking in temperatures in the 90s. It wasn't so much the heat, as the humidity. Also, lightning.

Herrick Lake, The Flea Market, and a Giant Spider

Image
Right now Herrick Lake's outflow has a lot of duckweed. The frogs seem to like it: There are also some really large snapping turtles--you have to look hard, but this turtle was huge--maybe a foot across (at least) Today we met Akutenshi7 at the Kane County Flea Market, and as usual there was too much stuff to see all of it. Also the guy who got 5.00 out of me for a Catty Noir not-in-box got another 5 from me for a tiny Tiffany spoon (but it is doll sized). Here i something I did not buy and I faintly regret it: I have no idea what they were asking for it. I also could have bought a totem pole: It would have been a long walk to the car. This is what I did buy, not counting the food, there were more apples-- but they were eaten. It's all small stuff that would fit in my purse. (J bought a plane for woodworking but it wasn't huge either) And in the category of huge things you can buy, they have this at Costco: SInce it's Costco, when they say giant, they mean it: ...

A chicken in a hat...

Image
A fancy feathered hat (from the Kane County Fair, a leftover photo) A chick in feathers..(What IS that, Popodoll?? The Barbarian of Rythmic Gymnastics?) And Galena Chicken Feet, which I need to finish painting. I would have worked on them today, but a good chunk of today was spent at the Arboretum Animal Hospital, waiting for a doctor to see the gray cat, who (we think) rolled in the mulch outside and got a stick in his eye, or at least the corner of it. He seems to be fine now, though he will need monitoring and twice-daily eye salve. There is no point in having him be an inside cat, either, since he is capable of eating a cord on the miniblinds or finding pins to chew on, or pulling a bookcase over on himself. At least outside he is busy chasing things on grass 90% of the time, and then he comes in and sleeps.

Amusements

I'm not really a fan of carnival rides, but this bungee bouncer looked like a lot of fun. The Kane County Fair had some pretty strange and wonderful things to do if you were tired of looking at animals, and under 30. Here is the "Freak Out": And why you won't find me on the Freak Out, though I would fit fine: If you just want to sit, there is Swine Racing Or Duck Racing: Or swinging with the Pharaoh (no, thanks).
