Doc in a Box, circa 1900

Image
The weather was nice Sunday, so J suggested that we go to "the cursed object place", which is really Affordable Antiques in Naperville. And it did not disappoint. I found, in booth number 504 belonging to "Christa", this treasure of a doctor's bag from around 1900, complete with hemostats, scissors, gauze, how-to books and medicine. I'm sure I made an interesting picture on the closed-circuit camera as I got down on all fours and squished my nose against the glass, trying to read labels--I also sneaked the photo above and I am glad it came out somewhat, though it's possible that a good camera phone would be better for this kind of guerilla photography than my pocket Canon is. Unfortunately not all the tubes were turned to the right angle for me to read the labels, but here was what I could see: nitroglycerine (probably for heart ailments..I'm not sure how stable or unstable that amount of nitro is in a small jar, but I did carefully take my hands of...

Fridge Follies

Image
"Can we borrow some ice?" My First World Fridge Problem with the refrigerator continues. It's a Sub-Zero, which is supposed to be some kind of high-end thing, though it's crappy design and current inability to hold a temperature would lead me to think they were hyped up. It is heavy, apparently--our new fridge from Home Depot was supposed to be delivered Saturday; a plain, no frills, 20 cu foot GE fridge in white. That I can stick magnets on. (The Sub Zero allows no exterior magnets because they don't stick). So the delivery guys come at 8:30 am, Before Coffee, walk into the kitchen, take one look at the Sub Zero, and turn around and leave, taking with them our new fridge and leaving us with a slip and instructions to talk to Home Depot about removing the Sub Zero. We go to Home Depot, and the manager is flabbergasted--she says in 18 years she has never seen this happen, and wants to know how big the fridge is. (It's fridge sized, though the compressor is o...

Something Cut From the Menu

This is the excellent Lebanese restaurant that we are using for our second kitchen; the fridge follies continue.

Buns and Cats

Image
The yard right now is overrun with rabbits and robins, which delights the cat, but also means that she can't decide what to chase. As soon as she starts after a robin, a chipmunk shoots past, and then a butterfly swoops low, and then three bunnies hop past, so poor Stripey is reduced to looking and me and going "Meeeeep." It's a good thing I can open cans for her or she would starve. I am glad though, that I no longer have to remove half-eaten rabbits from the living room rug. I miss the gray cat, but not the carnage. And I do like the rabbits because they love my weeds and mostly ignore the ornamental plants. This one was in my neighbor's yard this morning: I did get some home things fixed today--painted some molding, parts of the front door, touched up some edges and put up a support bracket for one of the living room curtain sets. I also talked to my neighbor and he pointed out a piece of eave flashing dangling down on his side of the house, which somehow I ...

Is Your Fridge Running?

Image
At this point I would be happy if it ran down the street, as in the punchline of prank calls. Prank calls have gone the way of party lines with cell phones, which is a good thing-- though even with cell phones, J occasionally gets a text that says "You so fine" at odd hours of the night, doubtless prompted by alcohol and poor typing skills. I just get offers of professional services for my business from companies that have an inflated idea of what I do--one company wanted to offer me a payroll service, which would be delightful if they had some mysterious pile of money that they could dole out to me at regular intervals, but apparently it doesn't work that way. In any case, I am watching the slow decline of my fridge and my food. The freezer side seems to be doing ok, and I am tempted to shift everything to that side and turn up the thermostat. The new fridge doesn't come until Saturday, and I had to already throw away some fuzzy meat. I should toss the eggs today...

An Elf on the Hard Drive

Image
This is Fabiana's Turmaline ( FK Designs on renderosity.com), and I had totally forgotten about her until I happened to look in the folder where I throw half-finished Poser renders and test items. And she is a perfect design for my elf Siean bjd, right down to the little ears and red hair. I'm guessing that is what I was subconsciously looking for when I saw Siean for sale. (Siean needs her own name instead of the Fairyland name as I am bad with "iea" as a combination of letters for typing. I can't type "Fairyland" either, it comes out Fairlyand. And totally unrelated, a friend sent me a link to a funny/sad story about cats and houses on fire from The Oatmeal, who is a great storyteller. With pictures, too: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/house
