2018 Starts Out With A Bang...

..Of a pipe in the garage bursting because of the intense cold. Even more exciting, when J tried to turn the whole house shutoff, the valve handle broke off completely. Luckily we managed to find the right inner valve in the forest of hanging tags, and shut it down to the stream you see (blurrily) above. My fondness for Tupperware and many towels came in handy. Of course it was New Years Day, but we did get a plumber to come out, and for the price of two Soom Limiteds, fix the pipes by removing them entirely from the garage-- and then tomorrow the other plumbing issues in the garage will be fixed on normal billing hours.

K and I went to Target on Sunday and bought J an additional stocking stuffer, since he didn't get any real toys:

It shoots those little styrofoam darts a LONG way! I also got some tree ornaments 70% off, and also another box of these goofy things, which I had already given several people as gifts:

(They will be on next year's tree, since I have a lot of "candy" ornaments).

I suspect 2018 will be the Year of the House Repair here.

  1. Oh no... I am so sorry this happened to you. Not a good way to start the new year, so I hope the rest of of it will be happy and hopefully dry.

    1. It could have been a lot worse (like at night!) and now we have a few other things fixed as well, so aside from being expensive because of the holiday, it turned out to be a good thing. The plumbing is starting to look like modern plumbing (almost) :D And thank you too!

  2. What a way to spend New Years Day!
If it makes you feel any better we in NC are getting some of those low temps too. Later this week we will not break freezing and down to 11 at night...And the coast will be getting snow. Most unusual for us. I think this long cold spell may finish off my Gardenias ... :(

    1. I hope not--gardenias are gorgeous and smell so wonderful! Down to 11 there is just amazingly cold; houses aren't built for it. Keep an eye on your pipes if you have any ones exposed like in a garage or along an outside wall. Here's wishing you normal weather asap!
