78 Tarot "Astro"
78 Tarot is a group art collaboration with 81 artists (there are extra cards :D) and in the last few years they have done several theme decks. They do them via Kickstarter, and I came late to the party-- so I have been trying to pick up the previous decks as I can. Some of the decks had a lot more Kickstarter money, so there were extra features like a fancy book, or an included mat, gilded edges, or a nice bag that went with it. The Astro deck seemed to have been one of the less popular ones; the one I have looks like it was a slightly ragged, imperfectly cut one (the card edges are really poorly cut) but the color printing and the weight of the cards is great. And it's so much fun--it's full of humor and hot neon colors, and the traditional Waite/Smith theme of each card is kept intact. The Page of Pentacles up there is studying it's Pentacle with delight, which is what the Page of Pentacles does--it's the "good student" card. And all four of the Pages are cats :D
Here's more of the cards:
The art is just fabulous--lots of different styles, all gorgeous. Everyone kept more or less in this palette, so the cards look good laid out together as a set, even with the different artists making the cards. The back is reversible and has a bit of a metallic overlay--and rockets:
You can see the cards are a good size, too. (That tablecloth came from Target last year, by the way :D) Shuffling is a little stiff, as the card stock is heavy, but it's doable.
There is a book, larger and nicer than the standard Little White Book:
The bag it's sitting on is also something you can buy as a standalone in the 78 tarot shop:
Here are more cards:
This is not the best photo--the colors here are super and the printing is sharp--and I loved the concept!
I thought this was an adorable take on the "Childhood" card-- where the flower filled cups are on an alien world. And of course that is a moonchild! Even the style of the art on this one is like a children's book.
The Nine of Wands is now ready for anything:
Instead of old-fashioned wooden wands, the defense system here is energy wands!
You have to have lightsabers in a space deck. (There is a Star Wars Tarot deck, and it's good. I don't need it, but it's fun to look at it on Pinterest.)
The Devil never looked better. You have to admit this verion of the Devil is a total party animal.
To sum up, I like this deck a lot. The customer service at 78Tarot is super, the decks are gorgeous and fun. I have several of the 78 Tarot decks now, and the rough edges on this one is literally the only flaw I have found in any of them. All come in nice, sturdy boxes. My only problem now is that I made it to this year's Kickstarter, ordered on time-- and I am really excited for them to come--this year's theme was "Elemental". It's waiting to go through Customs at the Port of Baltimore, so it could be any day now.
Edit--I found a nice page through of this deck on You Tube:
